The General Court Building (Kochubey’s House) is a unique historical and cultural monument of national importance, an administrative and residential building, the residence of Judge General Vasyl Kochubey. It is the only building on the territory of Baturyn that survived the brutal destruction of the capital by Moscow troops in November 1708.
In the 20th century, the House became the center of Baturyn’s museum business. In 1925, at the initiative of the P. I. Prokopovych Beekeepers’ Society, the P. I. Prokopovych Museum was opened in the house. After World War II, the house was restored and in 1975 the Baturyn Historical and Local Lore Museum was opened in it. In 1993, the State Historical and Cultural Reserve “Hetman’s Capital” was created on the basis of this museum.
Large-scale restoration of the House took place in 2003-2005. Since 2006, a museum has been operating in it. The history of the House is highlighted in its four exhibition halls and basement. The exposition introduces the history of the construction, restoration and use of the house, the representative of the untitled branch of the Kochubey family – Pyotr Kochubey, who left his mark on the history of Ukraine, and highlights the most famous Ukrainian stories of love and betrayal. A unique part of the building is the basement, which has not been rebuilt for several centuries; it recreates the interior of a prison.
